OK, this is a fairly complicated story so try to keep up… Coppola made a twelve minute short film called “The Peeper” which was about a man eavesdropping in on a nude photo session. He shopped the film around and the buyer that he found also had a black and white western called The Wide Open Spaces.
The buyer’s film was about a cowboy who kept seeing cows as naked women, and while the premise is interesting, they had determined that it was nearly unwatchable and needed some help. So they gave Coppola five hundred dollars to intercut their film with his short project. The final product ended up being Tonight for Sure. So, despite the “written and directed by” credit, he in fact only directed “The Peeper” and edited it into the film. Runtime 69 minutes. (Written and Directed by Francis Ford Coppola)
The following is an email we received from Mr. Coppola Regarding this film:
TONIGHT FOR SURE -- I made a short 12 minute film called THE PEEPER. We tried to sell it, and the only buyer had this b/w western about a cowboy who kept seeing cows as naked girls. It was un-watchable, so they bought our short, and gave me $500 to intercut it and some connecting footage to salvage their effort. When I had the titles made, I was so thrilled to see my name on a film, that I myself had it say Directed by FFC. In fact I was the edtior and had made the original short about the man eavesdropping on the photo session.
Regarding your questions: Tonight For Sure was a job to combine the short film The Peeper into a film the distributors had but couldn't release (that I had nothing to do with) called The Wide Open Spaces. I used footage from both, and this became Tonight for Sure.
Determined to match the success Russ Meyer found in his first nudie picture The Immortal Mr. Teas, Coppola raised three thousand dollars to produce “The Peeper”.
They came up with a plan to combine the stories by having the two lead characters share their stories.
