The Trouble with Harry (1955)

This film, along with Shadow of a Doubt, have been referenced by Hitchcock as his favorite of his own projects.  In this film, a small community of people runs across the body of a dead man. With indecision they bury him, dig him back up, and bury him again over and over.

Hitchcock approached this project with the goal in mind to prove that English humor would do well in America. He was partially right in that the film was met with limited success at its release, but has come to be a highly regarded work in later years.  The film was a surprise to many Hitchcock fans as Hitchcock hadn’t really taken on a lot of comedic projects in the past.

The way that both death and sex are treated with such a nonchalant attitude and approach, some more conservative viewers were a little taken aback.  A few critics have compared this film to the story of the death and resurrection of Christ, though Hitchcock has denied any intentional correlation.

Also, this movie was Shirley MacLaine’s first film.
