The Manxman (1929)

This film is based from a novel written by Hall Caine in 1894, and was actually made into a movie earlier in 1916 as well.  The story follows a fisherman and his friend the lawyer as they both secretly lust for the same woman. The fisherman, in effort to provide for their pending relationship, goes off to Africa to find his fortune.

He asks his lawyer friend to take care of the woman while he is away, but the arranged relationship soon turns to love. After receiving false word that the fisherman has died, the couple pursues their love without regard.  But the fisherman soon comes home to find a tragic betrayal.

The film is done well, and is a fairly entertaining watch, but certainly won’t be remembered as anything other than an early Hitchcock movie. This was also Hitchcock’s final silent picture.

(Directed by Hitchcock)
