Spellbound (1945)
Won the Academy Award for score. Nominated for special effects, black and white cinematography, director, supporting actor, and picture.
Another deep and twisted Hitchcock style romance. This film tells the story of a female psychiatrist who falls in love with the new head of her department. The man slowly starts to fall apart and she takes it upon herself to “heal” him by using the psychoanalytic skills she has learned over the years.
The story is well done, well told, and beautifully shot. There is a wonderful dream sequence in the film that was designed by the brilliant artist, Salvador Dali. The sequence only uses a few minutes of the film, though it was originally shot to be nearly twenty. The film’s producer, David Selznick, was told by a previewer that the sequence was “drivel”, and so it was cut.
What the hell did that guy know?
(Directed by Alfred Hitchcock)
