Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
Nominated for the Academy Award for original screenplay.
The tale of two Charlies. One is a beautiful young girl, innocent in the ways of the world and bored with her suburban American life. The other is her uncle and namesake. He is known as the "Merry Widow Murderer" and is wanted by the law in connection with multiple homicides.
They are, in effect, doppelgangers, or polar opposites, of each other. With the police hot on his trail, Uncle Charlie leaves the east coast to visit his sister, and hide out for a short while, on the west coast. He sees his welcome go from warm to cold as his niece, the other Charlie, learns about his crimes through her own observations and investigations. A detective she meets, and soon falls in love with, confirms her suspicions.
The uncle then sets his murderous sites on his niece; the only other person that knows his secret. This really is a great movie with a strong, smart story and talented cast. It was Hitchcock’s first big critical success in America and has been referred to by Hitchcock as the favorite of his own films.
