Italianamerican (1974)
This documentary is set during dinner with Scorsese's parents. While breaking bread with a small film crew, these Italian immigrants share their lives and experiences. Scorsese intermixes real historical footage in with his own to make this both touching and educational. The film is usually shown with a very early Scorsese short film called The Big Shave from 1967. Very brief at only six minutes, the film shows a man first shaving and then cutting himself repeatedly. It is said to be symbolic of Scorsese’s view on the war in Vietnam. (Written and directed by Martin Scorsese)
