American Pimp (1999)

Starring pimps and ho’s. There is an interesting story behind this great feature length documentary.  The film was finished and set to go in the lineup of the Sundance Film Festival. Such a buzz was stirred up around the film, that a number of different film distribution companies actually started a bidding war on the film before it was even screened.  Now that’s using a reputation.  The movie started off as a weekend research project for a film that the Hughes’ planned on doing titled Pimp:  The Story of My Life.  The brothers have always had a fascination with pimps and the pimping lifestyle and wanted to work it into a film.  But despite making a number of significant contacts in the pimping world, and shooting some prime interview footage, they decided against following through with the film. So instead of wasting the time and energy spent on their research, they took what material they had, fleshed it out, and turned it into a high energy documentary focused on the lives of American pimps. Nearly a dozen pimps reveal their thoughts and feelings about the wealth, the power, and the flamboyancy of being a pimp. Also edited into the film is interview footage with prostitutes and clips of 1970’s blaxploitation films like Willie Dynamite and The Mack.  Runtime 87 minutes. (Directed by Allen and Albert)
